Sporos is a simple puzzle game where you need to infect some cells with the sporos you get for each level. The cells are placed on a board (more like plane, since there is a neon theme) and form various shapes. It is up to the player to position the sporos in order to infect everything. The game is quite simple, has hundreds of levels to play, but this also makes it very repetitive and may lose the player’s interest easily. The gameplay is not helping out either.

The game has a calm, relaxing electronic-space music which binds well with the neon feel. The blue may have been over used, but it still looks good.

Each level can be completed with one, two or three stars. This all depends on how many times you rearrange your sporos. The problem here is that you can experiment until you find the correct layout, then replay the level and place everything correctly and still get 3 stars. For the lazy players who want hints all the time, the app allows you to purchase those for $0.99 for 30 hints. Why would anyone be paying to get the solution for a game is beyond me, but they have the option to do so nonetheless.

In terms of length, the basic free version comes with 300 levels. There are 3 more packs you can purchase, each with 300, 200 and 200 levels respectively. Two of those come with mutated cells, that make the levels more complex. Also, purchasing any pack will remove all the ads, which is always helpful.

Conclusion

Sporos is a nice game but not very entertaining and although very long even without the additional packs it doesn’t have that retention effect.

Remember the time when you were opening the newspaper on that certain page because you knew there would be a brand new Sudoku waiting for you to solve it? Although the days of pencil and paper are almost over, Sudoku has moved on to the digital realm where you can still enjoy the game. This app having the same title – Sudoku – is a simple and clean way to kill time and put your intelligence to the test. With a decent number of puzzles available from start, this game will surely be loved by those who enjoy Sudoku.

What we enjoyed from the start is the simplicity. There are no ads to clutter the screen or other borders, shadows and textures. This is great for small screens. To type in a number you need to first select that square and then tap on the correct number shown on the bottom screen. For those who used to make little notes as to what numbers could be placed where there is a solution for it: you can do this by tapping the "notes" toggle. They will appear as tiny boxes inside the parent cell.

In the menu we also found a solver screen. Here you can input the numbers on a blank 9×9 board and the app will solve the puzzle for you. It’s a nice feature to have, but considering that Google Goggles does the same thing (and it also allows you to take a picture of the Sudoku as input) this is redundant.

For those who need a challenge there is a timer running that will record your struggles. After the puzzle is complete, the total time will be displayed next to the puzzle’s thumbnail. There are 4 difficulty levels, each with 10 Sudoku puzzles. For those who want more, additional puzzles can be bought at 0.5 GBP per pack. There are 4 packs available, each with 400 puzzles and each corresponding to one of the difficulty levels.

One little thing that was annoying is that the game doesn’t keep the screen always on. So for those who set a short screen off timer to conserve battery it will be frustrating to keep turning on your device because you were thinking too much and tapping too little.

Conclusion

Sudoku is a great app for Sudoku lovers. It has a simple and crisp interface, no ads, music or other disturbances and comes with 40 free puzzles to solve. It’s basically a must have if you are into this game and don’t want to use the old pencil and paper.

For the puzzle lovers out there this is a new challenge. Puzzle retreat is a nice game about strategic moves in which you will place ice cubes on a board filled with holes and make sure all the cubes are used and no holes are left. The game is free and comes with 2 packs of 24 and 26 levels that will challenge your brain. For those that want more, there are 5 more packs you can by with 32 levels each.

The game concept is very simple. There are however special blocks that work differently but every time you come across a new type you will get a friendly in game tutorial that explains exactly what you need to do. The developers also made sure that every level has a Facebook post where players may comment and share ideas.

There is no time limit and no stars that are found in every game these days. All you need to do is to finish the level. The number of moves is irrelevant.

As far as the game design is concerned, the board has a nice and smooth wooden tone. There is no music playing in the background, just the blocks sliding into place. Overall the game quality seems good, no bugs or usability problems were found.

A nice puzzle game, simple rules, entertaining gameplay. Somehow we thought $ 0.99 for each of the additional 5 packs was a little too much.

A lot of people may have heard of Synology, the manufacturer of a top line of home network attached storage devices (NAS). Such a device is basically a small computer that houses one or more hard drives and is connected to your network. Although this may sound simple enough, the software that manages the content of the disk is astonishing. All your data is stored, organized and easily accessible from your TV, computer, tablet, smartphone, digital photo frame, you name it. However, the following article will only address the Android apps that are used to access different services on your NAS and some tips here and there. It goes without saying, but just like the description on Google Play states, you must own or have access to a Synology NAS in order to use any of these apps.

Setup

First off, the main advantage of having a NAS is that it should be accessible from your phone, wherever you are. This implies that it should always be powered on and connected to the internet. Most home and small office networks have a main router that provides internet access to all the connected devices. Although you have a public IP, you won’t be able to access your NAS from outside your network because all your requests will be handled by the router. The solution is to make sure you forward your necessary ports on your router to the local IP of the NAS system. For example, here is how the admin interface from a Linksys router looks like:

Notice that all the ports (from 0 to 65535) are forwarded to the IP 192.168.1.12. You might want to select only a couple of ports if you don’t want to be able to access certain services from the web, such as SSH. But for now forwarding all ports will make sure that the NAS is completely exposed to the internet.

An important aspect to consider here is that the NAS should have a static IP set. If it is set to obtain its IP dynamically, the router may assign a different one at some point in the future and that’s when your port forwarding will cease to work.

Now that we can access the NAS from the internet using our public IP there are still two problems to tackle. The first one, although not that important, is that you need to memorize the IP which is not very comfortable. The second arises because some ISPs issue dynamic IPs. Which means that although you wrote down your IP it will be changed when your modem at home reconnects (e.g. after the power goes out). Luckily, Synology already has a system to help you with these two. This will enable you to access your NAS by typing something like yournasserver.synology.me (there are 13 entities that provide these services, each with a bunch of different hostnames to choose a subdomain from). Setting this up will require you to access your NAS web interface and go to Control Panel > Network Services > DDNS. From here it is pretty straight forward.

Now that we have the NAS and network configured and accessible from any place with an internet connection let’s analyze the Android apps Synology offers.

DS finder

Let’s start off with the basic Synology NAS app: DS Finder. As the name suggests, this app will enable you to pinpoint your device on the network, display all important information such as name, model, IP, MAC address, storage status, uptime, etc. This data can be easily sent via email or used in other sharing apps. Also, once you login you can add the device as a favorite which will spare you the need to fill in the credentials next time. Here are the most important actions you can perform with this app:

shutdown the NAS

restart the NAS

turn on the NAS (Wake On LAN) – if your model supports this function

tell the NAS to make a beeping sound so you can identify it easier. This may not be of any use unless you have more than one device in your network and don’t know which is which.

Having said this, there is not really much more to this app. Once you have your NAS configured and working you won’t need to know (or care for that matter) about all the information provided. And it only works for the devices within the local Wi-Fi, not located remotely.

DS cloud

Next on our list is DS Cloud. If you are used to cloud sharing services such as Dropbox, SugarSync, Sky Drive or Google Drive then you should be already familiar with what this app provides. In a nutshell, it’s a way to map a folder on your NAS with a local folder on your Android device. The app runs in the background and synchronizes all changes directly to your phone. But don’t worry about bandwidth: you can easily set the app to only work when connected to Wi-Fi or set a size limit per file.

Before downloading the app, you need the Cloud Station package installed on your NAS. After this there is still one more step to set everything up, which is to enable the user’s home service. This will create a home folder where you will have your CloudStation folder. Everything in here will be synchronized.

The client side applications include apps for both Android and iOS on the mobile front and on the PC front both Mac and Windows are covered with their own clients. To get those head over to http://www.synology.com/support/download.php?lang=enu. Sadly, no Linux version is available at this moment. The good news is that the actual folder on your NAS is also kept in sync. So you can use that by connecting via FTP. Sure, this is nowhere near as comfortable as having it done automatically, but it is still a way to access your files.

A great advantage is that the Android app works exactly the same as that on your PC. It will sync to your device’s folder (provided that it is set to do that) even if you don’t open the app. Moreover, if you use a file manager like ASTRO to modify the contents of your synced folder then DS cloud will immediately pick up the changes and send them out. One little problem is that the app’s logo remains in the notification bar at all times. Some may find that annoying.

Now, before deleting your Dropbox account you might want to experiment with DS cloud a little. Sure, your space is now only limited by the hard disks(s) on your NAS but there are also some downsides too:

In order for this to work, your NAS must be online. If not then you can still use the app but no syncing will be done.

Imagine you are placing a 500 MB file on your laptop in the shared folder. In order to have your file on your mobile phone, first the file must be copied from your laptop to your NAS and then from your NAS to your mobile device. That means that if you are not at home you are directly dependent on the download/upload speed that your ISP provides. You simply cannot compare this to the network infrastructure that a dedicated cloud service has to offer.

This may not be an issue for everybody, but I use an iPad together with my Android phone. On the iPad version of DS cloud I have to manually add each and every subdirectory that I need to access. There is no tree-like browsing. So make sure you have adequate functionality across all your devices.

DS file

To start using DS file you also need to have a service running on your NAS: it’s called WebDAV and you can find it in Control Panel > File Sharing and Privileges > WebDAV. We recommend you only enable HTTPS at this point and select the same on your Android app. And now you have complete control of the entire file system on the NAS using this tiny app. You can even copy files from/to your phone.

Then interface is straight forward. There are only 3 tabs: one with the remote file system, one with the files from your device and one that will display the status of certain tasks such as uploading or downloading. There isn’t really anything more we can add here: it’s simple and does the job very well.

Honestly we kind of prefer this app against DS cloud because it gives access to the complete set of files and not just a custom folder.

DS photo+

Ds photo+ is the app designed to facilitate managing the Photo Station on your NAS. Photo Station is an add-on package that allows you to setup a web interface to display all your photo albums and share them with your friends (more details and screenshots on the Synology website).

The app can be set to automatically upload every picture you take with your phone to a designated album on your Photo Station. This can also be set to be private so don’t worry about privacy. The whole process runs smoothly: right after taking a picture it is uploaded and immediately available on your drive at home. There is only a small notification about uploading that you might be able to see if you exit the Camera app fast, but other than that the user can easily forget the app is running in the background. It can also be set to only upload over Wi-Fi in care the carrier data plan is limited.

Another interesting feature is the ability to view a map where all your photos from an album were taken. This is also available in the full web version of Photo Station, but it is a nice thing to have on your mobile device as well.

Unfortunately it does take some time to generate the thumbnails for your photos and it takes even longer if your Synology NAS is doing something else at the same time.

This app basically is a normal music player, the difference being that it streams directly from your NAS. So if you want access to 4 TB of music on your phone, this is the perfect solution. Note that it does consume a large amount of bandwidth so you might want to hang around a Wi-Fi area or get a bigger data plan for it.

Apart from the normal browsing by Folder, Playlist, Recently Added, Album, Artist and Genre of your music files, there is also a Radio tab with a lot of stations for you to choose from. Unfortunately we did not find any way to add new stations from the app.

This app is very similar with DS audio. Apart from the browsing and player, DS video can also tell the NAS to stream video content to a TV in its local network. Yes, that means you can play anything for your folks at home while you go out.

DS cam

One important function of the Synology NAS is the ability to act as a network camera recorder. You can add IP cameras from the network to your Surveillance station (an add-on package on your NAS) and set them up to record continuously or at a predetermined schedule. With DS cam you can login and take a peek at what’s going on at home or play an older recording. Note that while testing we were unable to play any files when in HTTPS mode.

While in the Live View mode you can also take a snapshot of the video. This image will be saved locally, on your phone.

The app also seems to allow the NAS to send push notifications directly to your mobile device. So if a camera detects some movements you could be notified immediately. This worked without any problems on an iPad (the same DS cam app) but on Android the NAS’ Surveillance station did not recognize the device.

DS download

The app is pretty simple. You have quick access to your download tasks, you can remove, resume, delete etc. There is also an integrated browser available so you can use that to navigate and select what file or torrent you wish to download. If you want extra options, you can tap on menu > settings and there you can set download speed limits per protocol (FTP, Bit Torrent, NZB).

One little inconvenient bug was the fields from the add add screen. You cannot use those to paste information from another app.

At the end

If you are a Synology user here are a few links that might help you out:

A site where you can buy extra IP camera licenses that will be transferred by email is http://www.synology-camera-software.com/ipcam_uk/. Most other retailers sell these on packaged cards which require additional shipment costs and time. Plus you can also pay with PayPal at ipcam.nu. And don’t buy cheap cameras.

Find out what devices were tested by Synology to be compatible with your NAS at http://www.synology.com/support/compatibility.php?lang=us

Shift It comes as another casual puzzle game, with bright colors, catchy sounds and easy rules. Basically it is a 2D version of Rubik’s Cube along with some nice seasoning of rewards and a couple of challenges to spice up the gameplay. Unlike the original Rubik’s Cube, here you will find blocks of at least two different colors. The aim of the game is to position the blocks in a way that allows all blocks of the same color to be connected with at lease one edge. Sounds simple if you are playing with 9 blocks on a 3×3 board, but things do get complicated pretty quick.

As with all the other quick games on the market like Cheese Tower, Cut the rope, Where’s my water? or HeavenHell, the levels are grouped together on a few screens. Each level will get you one, two or three stars. The stars will enable you to unlock the higher levels.

The first levels are quite easy and most of the time you get 3 stars for the fewest moves possible. But later on you might find yourself shifting blocks just to get an idea what the solution might be. To raise the difficulty there are a number of tricks that you will soon find out about:

some levels have more than 2 colors

some blocks contain more than one color

medium and big levels contain more blocks

some blocks are immutable – we found this to be actually an advantage: you will leave those alone and focus on the others to find your solution

Advertising is not really annoying, but from time to time you will get a popup ad which does get in the way. This is the price to pay for using a free app.

Conclusion

Shift It is a nice casual puzzle game. It may not be an option for hardcore gamers but for the average young user it should be just fine. Other than that there is not much we can say about it. Enjoy!

The running takes place in a post apocalyptic city, filled with burning cars, school buses and crushed airplanes. Your character simply runs on the streets with you controlling his direction, jumping and ducking to avoid obstacles or collect bonuses. There are also certain power ups you can unlock as the game makes progress and other goodies (most cost real money though).

To keep the game interesting, apart from the free run where you have no goals there is a campaign mode, spread out through 14 days, each with 5 different challenges. The challenges range from having to collect a certain amount of duct tape (DT), to reaching a certain distance or buying stuff using your DT.

Graphics and quality

Overall, the game is quite nice and responsive. The 3D graphics and effects look great and the level of detail is enough to create the illusion of a real city. You can find anything from taxis, police cars, lava lakes to airplane engines, pipes, roadblocks and bridges. The soundtrack and fx are decent, but nothing spectacular. Each day has a different theme so you will witness sunny days, thunderstorms or sunrises.

However, after a few played games you start to recognize certain patterns of obstacles that keep repeating themselves. This is not necessarily a bad thing and it will help you down the line.

Gameplay and tips

The End App strikes a good balance between gameplay elements. Good graphics combined with a responsive interface and a simple, but decent storyline will get you hooked up fast.

When a lot of obstacles appear and you don’t know which way to go, simply follow the duct tape trail. It always follows the correct path, be it through jumping, ducking under a truck or cutting corners.

Be careful with the Movie Mode power-up. While flying you are invincible, but when the counter reaches zero you will fall down. There are times where you simply fall in lava pits that span the entire width of the road. No use tilting the device left/right here. Get used to it.

Keep the Lucky Coin for the challenges. There is no use for it in the Free Run.

Downsides

Throughout the whole game you are invited to buy the PRO version ($2.99 at the moment) to unlock new options. Starting from the 13th day in the campaign, you are forced to skip the challenges using DT because they require the purchase of locked items. You might say that the free game ends on day 12.

A huge problem that happens far too often is that the environment renders too slow. This leaves you running without seeing anything for a few seconds. But rest assured that the obstacles and turns are still there. Your only hope is to keep jumping and pray you don’t hit anything and the road doesn’t make a 90 degree turn. This might be a problem encountered solely on older devices though.

Conclusion

The end app is a fun game with enough features and gameplay tricks to satisfy the average player’s entertainment needs. It is however a bit modest in terms of free features and very generous in terms of here’s all you could enjoy if you only pay for it.

The game consists of a series of screens where you simply have to think logically and find out the solution to your current problem by tapping various objects. The main character is nicely placed in the story and humor will keep you entertained at every pace. The game is not that challenging in terms of complexity so even younger players may find it interesting. All in all, you will get a couple of hours of enjoyment but not more than an afternoon of total gameplay. Yes, it is somewhat short.

The story

The entire game seems pretty well designed, with all the needed elements (story, graphics, gameplay, sounds) fitting well together. The story is quite funny: your character is a man from the future who happens to travel back in time and land his ship on Hamlet. Unfortunately for the space-fabric-space-continuum-thingy Hamlet was on a very important mission to rescue his beloved Ophelia who was kidnapped. Now it is up to you to do that and make sure the future remains safe. So yeah, Hamlet dies even before the game begins. Poor Hamlet.

Gameplay

The game is not really challenging. Most of the screens (puzzles) are fairly obvious. If you get stuck you can still access a hint. The puzzles themselves do differ quite a lot: there are some where timing is everything, there are some where attention to detail is important (identify where you are located within a crowd of people) and some where you just have to find the correct item. All the action takes place in different areas that fit completely inside the screen (no scrolling needed). There is no way to die so pretty much all you can do is go forward. Even the boss battles are not boss battles per se: there is no additional difficulty added. And to make things even more simple there is no inventory available.

There is one little problem we did find. Although the game keeps your progress and will resume if you turn off your phone, it simply advances straight. There is no way to return to an existing level. Once the game is completed it just resets all the progress so you can start from the beginning. You are unable to create additional profiles so if you plan to share the game with your friends on the same phone this will not work.

Graphics

Most animations are simple but go well with the rest of the game’s style. No 3D graphics if that’s what you are asking. The areas are designed pretty good and you can see the attention to detail.

One little gotcha that might be useful is the zoom ability which is not that important but might help you with the details. Simply pinch to zoom in on any screen.

Conclusion

Hamlet is a great puzzle game. Notice that we added an asterisk on the free price in the summary. You can download the game for free, but it is extremely short (only the first act). So it is more close to a demo then a complete game. You will have access to the rest if you make an in app purchase of $0.99. But it is worth it in out opinion.

If two eggs of different colors collide then you lose. In a nutshell this is it. On top of these simple rules there are additional combos and boosts that can be applied to make the game even more attractive. For example adding more lives will allow you to get a higher score and even more experience points to help you out.

There are 3 arenas where you can play. The way in which these can be unlocked is a little odd. But first let’s talk about farms. Yes, farms.

Farming?

The way in which the developers chose to integrate the economic side of the game is through farms. Basically you get 4 yards out of which only one is available at the beginning. The flow is this:

You play a game and earn coins.

Using coins you can buy different items for a certain yard. Depending on the item type, it will bring a boost to the yard’s Birds, Plants, Comfort or Décor ratings.

When all the ratings reach 100%, your yard will gain an additional star.

Unlocking the second play area requires one star in yard 2 and for the third area one star in yard 3 is required.

But it also gets complicated. When you buy certain objects you will get a special bonus. For example combining a Tiny Beak with a Baby Bear Pumpkin will bring you an additional score point for every yellow egg in the first play area. These are called mini-quests.

Boosts

To make things even more complex, you also get to spend experience points on boosts. One experience point is obtained after each new level. Each new level is reached when you have enough experience, experience which you get from playing the game. Simple, right? In contrast with the mini-quests in the yards which have a lower impact on the game and are easier to get, boosts are more powerful. For example you can choose to have extra lives. This will make sure that when 2 eggs crack, the whole screen will be cleared and you will continue the game from that point on.

Commercial

As with most free games, you can also opt to pay for additional coins and unlocking different arenas. Or even remove the banners altogether.

Conclusion

We liked this game for its simplicity and overall feel. With next to no time to master it needed, this is great for children and users looking for a quick and fast game. That being said, we did not find any incentives to keep on playing or reach a higher score. All in all, it’s just an egg matching game no matter how many boosts, power-ups and chickens you throw in.

BraveSmart is a puzzle game where you need to connect at least 3 adjacent resources to form one of greater importance. Scotsmen will wonder around leaving resources you can use to build up your houses, sheep and cows will block your way and useful tools will help you clear out any mistakes. Sounds familiar? Then take a look at Tiny Town, the similar game from Spry Fox LLC.

The game features 4 stages (Lowlands, Animal Party, Highlands and Highland Rumble). Each stage contains 12 levels where the goal is usually to erect a certain type of structure.

Unlike Triple Town, BraveSmart has hexagon shaped areas so you can use 6 adjacent spaces instead of just 4. This does sound easy, but it also means that the Scotsmen and animals will have more space to wonder around.

Conclusion

BraveSmart is a nice puzzle game, it’s very easy to learn and somewhat harder to master. If you liked Triple Town, you will like BraveSmart.
