Defender Tricks

We recently reviewed the Defender game from DroidHen. Here are some general tips and strategies to help you throughout the game.

Enemies

There are only 4 types of common enemies in the game. Each has his unique characteristics and requires different handling.

screen2screen4screen3screen1

The first one has an average speed, only as melee attacks and is easily killed.

The second is the fastest monster, but is rather weak. Shoot them in advance or they will get to your wall very fast.

The spiked monster has a hard skin which proves difficult to penetrate. They are the slowest but once they reach the wall it’s bad.

The fourth type is the only one with range attacks. It will only approach about one third of the screen before stopping and shooting green projectiles. When coming in packs these should be immediately frozen or dealt with in some other way, but before they get in range of your wall.

Boss enemies

After each 10th level there is at least one powerful monster that needs to be defeated. They appear after all the normal monsters so you need to be prepared and have mana and hit points to spare when they come.

There are 2 types of powerful monsters:

screen5dragon

The first green orc has melee attacks and moderate speed. You need to have spells ready because each time you hit him with magic spells it gets knocked back to the right of the screen. It doesn’t matter how powerful the spell is to get that knock back effect so use only cheap ones, that don’t need too much mana. Apart from approaching the wall this monster also jumps up and down so keeping the jet of arrows towards him is difficult. The main trick is to shoot arrows and hit a spell just before he reaches the wall. The Power Shot skill helps a lot because it causes the monster to slow down and gives you additional time to recover mana and spells.

The second one is more powerful and has three different attacks. It can ram into the wall from time to time (and there is nothing you can do to prevent that), summon other monsters or shoot a jet of flames. It also is immune to the Power Shot skill. The most important thing to learn is how to prevent him from shooting the flames. Before doing so there is a short animation when he charges his star. If you hit him with a spell at that moment he will stop.

Gameplay tips

  • Do not use crystals to replenish your mana. Crystals are scarce and you will regret it later. Do NOT use them this way! Unless, of course, you plan on actually buying them from the market.
  • For spells that damage the entire area always try to maximize the number of monsters receiving the blow. It’s normally unwise to use an Armageddon when a wave of melee spiked monsters have just entered the screen. Try to slow down with arrows that wave and wait for another before unleashing hell.
  • For boss monsters keep one spell from the first category (Fire ball, Glacial Spike or Lightning Strike). Those cost only 35 mana and can be used to knock back or stop other attacks. No need to spend 125 mana for an Ice Age.
  • Power shot together with Multiple Arrows are a powerful combination. Each arrow will knock back the monsters.

Good post. I came to the same conclusions (went to level 645 without buying stuff).
    Additional advice :
    - Very important : don’t lose crystals ! Make everything possible to win 2/level.
    - Don’t waste them on all the lightning spells, it’s crap. Just Keep a lightng strike level 1. It’s enough to stop the boss sorcerer from casting his painful firespell.
    - Frost nova is sometimes a cheap alternative to manage a wave of vampires you cannot push back with arrows. You dont need to waste 125 mana with Ice Age.
    - When the boss sorcerer starts to summon big numbers of monster (around levels > 450-500) wipe them out ASAP with arrows or big spells (armageddon or ice age). This got the advantage of pushing back the green bosses.

    • alecs says:

Level 645 is really something. I also kept the lighting spell to a minimum and used it as a block for the boss. That is a solid advice right there.

      • Matt says:

I disagree. I’m at 705 w/o buying anything, and lightning is far more useful than fire. At higher levels neither do much damage, but the lightning has the added advantage of slowing enemies down. Keeping one spell at a minimum is a good idea, but it should be the fire spell.

        • Rudolphus Kofanikov says:

It is rare to bump into someone who understands how to use tools to their advantage… I would say 9 our of 10 people say thunder spell is useless. I agree that the fire spell is what I would, actually, not even spend one crystal on.

The fire spell is far more useful in early stages, but as you start moving through the stages, you should already see how you should spend your crystals: Get a relatively high level 2 ice spell (until the crystal cost outweighs upgrade), a high level 3 thunder spell, and as low of a fire spell as possible.

First, the biggest use of the ice spell is to stop hoards of purple monsters — the two other spells can’t kill or hold off big quantities of the purple monster. Since the area between the right end of the screen and where the purple monster stops is limited ( fire spell) and slow them down as well (power shot).

When the monsters are so numerous and tough, the damage-based fire spell becomes completely worthless, because 9 damage points may be three times 3 damage points, but they’re all the same to a monster with 1000 hit points. If you disagree, do ahead and spend all your crystals on fire spells and watch your asshole bleed at stage 500 as the monsters gangbang you as you blast them with your fire spells.

          • I understand that if u use the big lightning spell you increase the arrow damage cause the monster are slowed, but i go to the other ways. I have the level 1 lightining spell, the frost nova and the armageddon. I’m at level 712 and I wasted a lot of money and crystal in useless bow/spell/moat… This mean that I don’t have an optimized costruction. When i cast my armageddon level 10 i see almost everything go near to death so i think is very useful cause you can wait that the monster comes near to the wall and cast it removing the first line and almost killing the other lines. I think that if i wait the enemies near the wall with the lighting i cannot kill them, and I cannot take advantage of the slowness. This means that i have to use it when they are at a certaing distance causing to hit a less number of enemies.
This is why i Think that fire is better.

  2. James N says:

    Hopefully I can add something.
-Mana is really important, best to use the cheap spells and spend spare crystals on gaining more mana
    - Use the cheap spells until that level of spells simply does not do the job anymore, then upgrade to the next level.
-Crystals are really valuable. Don’t pass a level unless you are getting the life bonus. This happens when the bar is not flashing and the castle still looks fairly intact.

    Question:
How do you get more than 2 arrows? Does it eventually happen if you just keep upgrading multiple arrow?

    • alecs says:

Yes, multiple arrows will eventually rise the number to 4. This is the most important skill so I would put all my crystals into maximizing multiple arrows.

I have to disagree with your first point. You use crystals for upgrades which are infinitely more important than finishing a level. I would not use them to replenish mana.

    • DoomGuyBFG says:

Not everyone can be pro like me, because I have five arrows at 65%, and no, I did not spend a penny on this game.

  3. Armin says:

Never use crystals to replenish mana. Upgrade your max mana as much as possible first or max it and keep other spells only as strong as they need to be to let you finish levels with +2 or +4 crystals bonus and save for the ultimate bow. Arrows: More arrows is not always better. Example: 2 arrows with 75% damage is better than 3 with 55% so make sure that you have enough coins to jump to 60% or more straight away. Decide if you want fast or strong arrows and do most upgrades there, don’t mix equally. I went for fast ones as you can double the damage easily. Put some coins in to push back too very early. Don’t worry about money too much, if you do it right you will always have enough as you often finish 100% life and get extra bonus. With this strategy I’m on level 600 and I have restarted about 15 times since level 200 when I got the strongest bow….Before level 300 it’s possible to have less than 100 restarts if played carefully but it’s harder. Now I have to figure out the best upgrade route for spells… I have 90 crystals left… I use ice age lvl 1, meteor lvl2 and thunder storm lvl2. Any tips? Also my bow seems to stop upgrading after +8 for strength and agility, +5 push back and +4 arrows. Same for you guys?

    • DoomGuyBFG says:

Two arrows better than three?! Think again, noob! Do the math. Two arrows at 75% or three at 55%? Let’s say you do 100 damage. Your two arrows will do 75 damage each. Hit one target with both arrows and that’s 150 damage! Wow!! Now my three arrows will do 55 each, but if I hit one target with all three, omg dats liek 165 damage!! No thank you, ma’am, you can keep your two diaper-wearing arrows. Of course, if you were as pro as me, you’d be dishing out five arrows at 65%. So kthxbai.

    • teja says:

      “2 arrows with 75% damage is better than 3 with 55% ”

This is really a good tip.

My bow current auto upgrade stats are as below:
      strength-21,Agility-9,Powershot – 4,Fatal blow – 5, Multi arrow – 4.

Dont worry, Your ff bow will upgrade automatically for every 5 levels. I am at 643 stage now and level 80. Till now i havent buy any crystles/coins.

  4. luca says:

yeah…its true. it stops upgrading after some time…i have the last weapon since stage 150 and i am waiting for an upgrade since 600 stages;-)

  5. jhavok says:

i have no qualms with using a crystal for mana on a boss level when im confident of a win. Aside from that upgrades only.

  6. amit says:

what’s the use of HONORS gained?????

  7. tmassing says:

    1. Does fire ball have an effect on the damage Armegeddon does? I mean, when you cast Armegeddon, does each explosion do the same damage as the fire ball? Very important to know that.

  8. ethanova says:

    Tips? Root. Cheat ;)

  9. buddyr says:

I’m level 300 now and have saved enough crystals to get the final fantasy bow. Can someone post the beginning stats, and say if the bow is worth the 250 crystals it takes? I’m thinking maybe upgrading the mana instead.

  10. jay says:

What if you have too many coins and nothing left that you can buy with them? Is it possible to exchange them with mana or something in advanced levels? I have upgraded everything that I can upgrade with coins to the max.. So now, coins will just keep piling up?

  11. Andrea says:

Alright, I’m past level 500 and have another game in process to almost level 400. Anyone that thinks mana is pointless has no clue. Its important to note when you upgrade your spells the three tabs at the top if the screen drop down to choose the next of 3 levels. Fire is THE most important spell. When y ou get into thr 500′s you HAVE to use spells multiple times consecutively to get anywhere and that is eith the bow of legend and 4 arrows at maxed damage. In fact I have everything maxed except ice, lightening and my mana, which is at 300. I have close to 2 million coins and nothing I can spend them on. Does anyone know how to go beyond maxed upgrades???

  12. mike says:

I have battled someone with 5 Arrows….how did he get that? Anyone know how to go beyond max 4 arrows?

    • teja says:

Ofcourse, It will max at 4 arrows only, But as your ff blow is upgrading….. You may get 5 arrows.. I also had this doubt earlier.. dont worry

  13. Derpadoo says:

How does mana regeneration scale? I suspect it is as a percentage of total mana, since larger mana pools seem to regen faster.

Greetings, fellow Defender players! I have read your comments and decided to share my ultimate guide to winning epically at this game. I am currently at stage 400 and I have maxed the upgrades of Multiple Arrow, Power Shot, Fatal Blow, and Ice Age. I fire 5 arrows at 65% and have a 75% chance for a fatal blow. I can hear the noobs now; “But DoomGuy, how is this possible? I’m at stage over 9000 and only have 4 arrows!!” Read up, preemie! This guide will help you get the best of everything without spending your daddy’s hard earned money on a cheap little phone game.

    The Legendary Bow.

    “LIEKOMGHOW?!?!?!?1?”

Well, wipe the Cheeto stains off your phone and listen up! It’s all about saving your crystals and spending your gold wisely! Pinch those crystals like a Safeway club member clips coupons, and you too can own the amazing Legendary Bow no later than stage 130! And yes, it is worth the trouble.

First things firat, you WILL get the life bonus crystal. EVERY TIME! Why? Because that is the difference between raping face with the bow

    “LIEKOMGHOW?!?!?!?1?”

Well, wipe the Cheeto stains off your phone and listen up! It’s all about saving your crystals and spending your gold wisely! Pinch those crystals like a Safeway club member clips coupons, and you too can own the amazing Legendary Bow no later than stage 125! And yes, it is worth the trouble.

First things firat, you WILL get the life bonus crystal. EVERY TIME! Why? Because that is the difference between raping face with the bow on stage 126 and sucking your mama’s tit until stage 253. The only thing you will spend crystals on is level 1 ice and level 1 lightning. After that, SAVE! Better get good with that bow, rookie.

Now for gold. Get strength to level five right away. Next, level five agility. Now you can get Power Show and Fatal Blow. Get both of these to level three in any order you please. Now you have access to the awesome multiple arrow. You’ll definitely want this! Once you grab that, the only thing left to do is save those crystals. Upgrade whatever you please, primarily focusing on multiple arrow and fatal blow. Save mana for ice. Use them on the fliers, they hurt. You shouldn’t have much problem with the rest. However, every boss level, save ALL your mana. You can probably get away with casting one early in the stage, but make good use of that bow. When you get two ogres at a time, try to keep them together so you can knock them back wih one spell. Dragon is simply tank and spank. Every bow you unlock, EQUIP IT, DERP! Why would you not?? By stage 125, you should have the Legendary Bow!

Yes, you will die. Many times. Keep at it. There is no pwnalty for losing.

    • Hax0r says:

I totally agree with you, but I upgrade the spells to the ice nova lvl1 and fire just at one. As for the bow, yea, you need to take it as soon as possible and one more thing, it upgrades every 5 levels but XP, not stages.

  16. flygirl says:

Do you need to have the final phantom gun (the one that costs 250 crystals) to get to 5 arrows? Or is it a level thing?

  17. marini says:

I am at stage 1200. Multi arrow is 107% and i still have players who cant beat i n online mode. I wouldd appreciate if somebody would tell me the limit of strength (current i have 158) and also the lmit of multi arrow %.
Would be great if i have the answer from somebody you know.

    • alcoholichero says:

the limit for strength is 200 and the liimit for the percentage of multi arrows is about 65% or 70% (which i am not sure)but u can raise the percantage and strength by using a phantom or final fantasy (which is more recommendable)

  18. anonoymous says:

the limit of strength is 200 and the limit for the percentage of multi arrows is about 65% to 70%, but u can increase it with a phantom or a final fantasy bow (which is recommended)

  19. rr says:

ser i have a question..ser my multi arrow e already level max but d arrow e only 4??what i can do to reach arrow 5 or more??

  20. jaylen23 says:

To get the 5 arrows without spending 250 crystals for ff arrow you havbe to buy all phantom arrow starting level 1 to 6 then upgrade multiple arrows from level 9 to 11
